Winner of the 2009 Cesar Award from the Good Hotel Guide as Great Britain's 'Island Hotel of the Year 2009' and therefore one of their top ten hotels.
The Star Castle was built in 1593, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth, for the defence of the Isles of Scilly. It stands on the fortified Garrison Hill to the west of Hugh Town, St Mary's and commands magnificent views of the sea and isles in every direction.
Visitors cannot fail to be thrilled by the Castle, which has been the scene of so many historic occasions. Built in the form of an eight pointed star, it is surrounded by a dry moat and 18ft broad ramparts. It has a huge "great kitchen" fireplace where oxen were roasted whole. The dining rom was the original officer's messroom. It belongs, as Professor Richardson says, "to the age of Drake and the sea-dogs, and is a symbol, a monument without equal, of the most adventurous period in English history".
In 1643 the Castle sheltered the Prince of Wales, afterwards Charles II, from the parliamentary forces. Later it became the headquarters of the famous Royalist Privateer, Sir John Grenville, until stormed and captured by Admiral Blake. It was the last stronghold of the Cavaliers.
Today, apart from up-to-date amenities, the Castle remains unaltered and unique. It was officially opened as an hotel in 1933 by the then Prince of Wales (later to become King Edward ViII).
The hotel combines the service and values from an earlier age with amenities of the present. Guests are invited to dine in a choice of two award winning restaurants specialising in local produce including lobster and crab caught by the hotel's own fishing boat.
Guests can play unlimited complimentary golf and tennis. The indoor heated pool is located in the gardens of the hotel.
The Star Castle Hotel is owned and personally managed by proprietors Robert Francis and his family, who invite you to sample the unique atmosphere of the castle and these Islands, one which will tempt you to return time and time again.
